About Harlan Ellison
As well as acting as sf advisor on important sf series like Babylon 5, and writing memorable episodes of Star Trek and The Twilight Zone, Harlan Ellison has had a distinguished career in science fiction and fantasy both as editor and as short story writer--he has never written an sf novel. His two anthologies Dangerous Visions and Again, Dangerous Visions--a projected third has never appeared--were crucial to the American New Wave by providing a market in which it was possible to say things about sex and politics, and in ways that varied from stylised fabulism to the radically deranged, that could not be said in the SF magazines of the 1960s. His own idiosyncratic short stories are true to the same aesthetic values as his editing--absolute emotional honesty conveyed by any means neccessary. Some of them deal with stock sf themes like the mad computer that tortures throughout eternity the last survivors of humanity--'I have no mouth and I must scream'--or dystopia--'Repent, Harlequin, said the Ticktock Man'; other dramatize philosophical themes like the Death of God--'Deathbird'; while others engage semi-confessionally with the dilemmas of the contemporary male writer--'All the Lies that are My Life.'

Harlan Ellison recommends
The Two-timers
The Two-timers (1968)
Bob Shaw
" A stunning novel of parallel worlds. If anyone needed incontrovertible proof that the fiction of wonder has come of age, Bob Shaw has provided it in one extraordinary novel of power, warmth, ideas and imagination. The Two-Timers says something fresh and memorable about the monomania of love, about the way we wear our universe, about a few of the eternal verities that suddenly seem less secure. Aside from the sheer impetus of the story, which grasps and won't release till the unexpected conclusion, the writing is exquisite. It knocked me cold: painfully good. "
Past Master
Past Master (1968)
R A Lafferty
"As with everything the man writes, the wind of imagination blows strongly, with the happy difference that in a novel he can reach full gale-force...this is a great galloping madman of a novel, drenched in sound and color."
Tower of Glass
Tower of Glass (1970)
Robert Silverberg
"In Tower of Glass Silverberg surpasses himself. This is a multi-levelled work of high adventure, considerable tension and social consciousness."
The Iron Dream
The Iron Dream (1972)
Norman Spinrad
"Disturbingly fascinating - the stunned reader can only gasp in wonder!"

Kindred (1979)

The Dragon Lord
The Dragon Lord (1979)
David Drake
"The first sword-and-sorcery novel I've read in years that made me want to cheer, rather than toss the book in the dustbin. T H White would have loved this new view of that ancient, wondrous fable."
