Eric Flint recommends

World War 3.1 (2023)
(Axis of Time: Reloaded, book 1)
John Birmingham
"An excellent combination of near-future military science fiction and alternate history and a riveting story to boot."
thumb
Second Chance Angel (2020)
(Last Stop Station, book 1)
Griffin Barber and Kacey Ezell
"A war veteran and a disembodied artificial intelligence form a partnership to solve a string of horrible crimes. The human/AI detective theme hasn't been done this well since Isaac Asimov's Lije Baley and R. Daneel Olivaw novels, The Caves of Steel, The Naked Sun, and The Robots of Dawn -- with the advantage that the AI science in Second Chance Angel is that of the modern era, not Asimov's time."
thumb
Empire of Silence (2018)
(Sun Eater, book 1)
Christopher Ruocchio
"Christopher Ruocchio's Empire of Silence is epic-scale space opera in the tradition of Iain M.Banks and Frank Herbert's Dune, without being a clone of either of them. His is a welcome new voice in science fiction."
