Carlton Dellar couldn't have hoped for a more eventful eightieth birthday. His extended family has gathered under the reproachful eye of his spouse, Claudia, to celebrate with the poet for what is silently suspected to be the last time. Hours later, the guests gather on the lawns in confusion as Larchmoor Place, home to generations of Dellars, is razed to the ground by fire.
