At a fancydress party in a Jacobean manor house that Nathaniel and Katherine Gye attend, a body is dragged from the lake. Only the first misadventure, Nathaniel, a parapsychic investigator, must look back into the house's history, back to the 17th century when a gallows overlooked the house.
