The last two years had not been apply for Rowena Manville. Her father's squandered fortune and sudden death had left her penniless and the object of scandal; the post of companion to the elderly Mrs Clune, mistress of Gryphons, was perhaps the only road open to her. But even before she took up her post she had met Adam Lyngate, the dark, brooding, suspicious heir to Gryphones.
