A Novella by

A professional killer is captured at the site of a mass slaughter. There is no doubt about her guilt, yet every part of her existence remains a mystery. To uncover answers, an old Martian named Ash is brought in to meet what looks human from outside, but carrying a mind unlike any that he has ever seen.

The interrogation will take aeons and a marvel called the Necklace of Memory.

The World had a single public doorway, and with few exceptions, visitors didn't walk far before they had to stop, throwing their senses at the surroundings. Vast in two dimensions, the cavern was defined by a pair of granite walls towering over a thunderous torrent of foam and glacial silt and frigid water. And pressing against that current was a hot, thick and very dusty wind. Every sunny surface was perpetually bright, every shaded corner perpetually in shadow. The convincing illusion of a K-class star was riveted to one piece of the false salmon sky. Glass roadways clung to the canyons' faces and narrow glass bridges crossed from one side to the other, catching sunlight while making the overhead skies into a orange-white ribbon. The native animals were proteinaceous spectacles walking on odd-numbered legs. The 31-1s sported five legs, and they had a sturdy grace while moving and a lovely form as they kept still, and they didn't believe in Time, and they had exceptionally little patience for the concept of Death.

Robert Reed has published several hundred science fiction stories, plus more than a dozen novels. His novella, "A Billion Eves," won the Hugo Award in 2007. But Reed is best known for his tales of the Great Ship.
