Stephen M Baxter recommends
Cities in Flight (1970) (Cities in Flight) James Blish "A compelling future history, a tale of thistledown cities blown by the winds of time. This is one of SF's most original concepts, an exciting tale deepened and made utterly plausible by Blish's craft and his mature understanding of people and history. If you haven't read this yet, I envy you. Blish's cities will fly through your dreams." | To Hold Infinity (1998) John Meaney "Dark, complex and glitters with brilliant strangeness..." | Appleseed (1999) John Clute "Exuberant, witty, sexy, satirical ... every word is a special effects firecracker." |
Revelation Space (2000) (Revelation Space, book 1) Alastair Reynolds "The most stunning and original alien artefact in modern science fiction." | Paradox (2000) (Nulapeiron, book 1) John Meaney "John Meaney has rewired SF. Everything is different now." | Coyote: A Novel of Interstellar Exploration (2002) (Coyote, book 1) Allen M Steele "An homage to wonder, hope, and determination... Steele has constructed this glorious tale of a new starflung Mayflower from the legacies of Heinlein, Twaine, Hemingway, and others - and he has founded it on the essence of America." |
Vitals (2002) Greg Bear "Astonishing. I was blown away by its ferocious intelligence, astounding research and insight, and terrifying logic. Vitals is the ultimate conspiracy theory. Vitals is the future of the thriller, and a thriller of our future: Vitals is biotech noir. Read it with the light on. Prepare not to sleep easy." | Wyrmhole (2003) (Jack Stein, book 1) Jay Caselberg "An adrenaline rush of a debut." | Edenborn (2004) Nick Sagan "This guy obviously has a sense of wonder in his DNA." |
Resolution (2005) (Nulapeiron, book 3) John Meaney "John Meaney has rewired SF. Everything is different now." | Wall of Mirrors (2006) (Jack Stein, book 4) Jay Caselberg "Caselberg os Philip K. Dick gene-spliced with Raymond Chandler." | The Mirrored Heavens (2008) David J Williams "A crackling cyberthriller. This is Tom Clancy interfacing Bruce Sterling. David Williams has hacked into the future." |
