“Next time, you follow procedure,” Dad says as we get out of the truck. “You show a LITTLE of what you can do and then you restrain yourself until I’ve gotten the paperwork finished, understand? We are NOT going to have another episode like the one we had today—“

I turn on him, my hands clenching at my sides for all of a second before loosening. “Sure,” I say, simply, and stand in front of the door of our hotel room, waiting impatiently.

I could run, right now. I could leave him behind, but he’s too close to the truck. I don’t think I can outrun a truck. It’s a new one, he’d bought it after our last job. I don’t even know how much he charged that poor farmer, but Dad was overly cheerful for an entire day after we left. No, this calls for better timing. Plus… if he’s right about the Hall, where am I supposed to go?

I step into the hotel room, looking around and then wishing I hadn’t. “Pack your things, we’re leaving in the morning,” he says as he heads for his side of the room. I head for my bed, grabbing the two things I’d actually taken out of my bag.

“I’m already packed,” I say as I head for the bathroom to take a tepid shower. I stop in front of the mirror after I’m done, staring at my reflection for a moment.

My name is Summer. My dad tossed the ridiculous name of “Gaia” on me when he decided to pull me out of school and live on the road. I’m sixteen years old, with chopped off red hair and green eyes. I’m…

Well, I’m positive that I’m a super.
