“Freddy,” Nico says as we reach the block outside of the school campus. “You were never meant to be a limelight cape. You’re something much, much more dangerous.”

I stare at him, wondering if he’s finally gone over the edge. “Two things,” I say, lifting two fingers in the air. “One, I climb WALLS, it’s really not that impressive. Two… if I’m that dangerous, why did you just give me five pounds worth of living metal?”

“You climb walls, you’re completely silent, to the point where my sound-based capes can’t find you easily, and you’re as fast as an A-class cape, when you’re still not fully grown,” he says. “You’re also far more agile. Of all my kids, you are one of the fastest to take out the crowd on Apocalypse night. Carla’s too nice to do it like you do. You should know that, we’ve got a running timer.”

“Max does it faster,” I point out.

“Max is a future Hall leader,” he says. “He cheats. Is this about not being a Legend?”

I go silent, thinking about how Piper had called not that long ago, telling us that she’s getting adopted and possibly going to become the next Sandman. “I…” I say, trying to figure out how to put it. “I… just… Every kid has this dream, well, the ones that grew up in the system do, where all of a sudden, they find out that they’re related to someone famous, or powerful, or… well, whatever. But I’m not, am I?”

We’re standing on a street corner, underneath a blinking light. He’s looking at me, and not saying anything, and it’s starting to get awkward. “I could give you a trite saying about greatness right now,” he says, “but I’ll tell you this, instead. You might not be related to a Legend, but you WERE raised by me. That, if you ask me, is more impressive."
