Peter Hadley leaves the steamer upon which he is second mate and goes ashore in Philadelphia to search for his sister who he has not heard from for two years. He soon becomes embroiled in a web of intrigue and realises his life is in danger, but continues his quest, travelling first to New York and then by sea to Buenos Aires.
