At an FSB listening station, an operator gets the fright of his life. A radio signal, long since consigned to history, has begun transmitting again. An automated voice simply repeating the same word over and over.

The radio signal, exclusively for communicating with Soviet agents abroad, was not meant to come back to life. But it has, and FSB Captain Svetlana Kuznetsova is ordered to investigate. But she has a hard time believing it is anything more than a malfunctioning transmitter.
