The next two stories in Jerry Oltion’s canon are both short-shorts, so Jerry collected them in one package to provide a little more bang for your buck. Despite their brevity, both are complete stories.
“Peace on Earth” harkens back to the days of the author’s childhood, when “duck and cover” drills were common in gradeschools — not because of shooters but in preparation for the nuclear war that seemed nearly inevitable at the time. Many years later, when the Berlin wall came down, those early years of the Cold War seemed like the distant past. International tensions are high again today, but for a couple of decades it seemed like we might be on the verge of world peace. This is the story of what that future might have looked like to a teenager of the day.
“Shrödinger’s Lifeboat” is a physics thought experiment set on a spaceship whose crew faces a terrible dilemma. They only have enough air to keep half the crew alive. But quantum physics offers a possible chance for them all to survive.
“Peace on Earth” and “Shrödinger’s Lifeboat” are the 23rd and 24th volumes in the collected short stories of Jerry Oltion. Jerry has had his short stories published in most of the major science fiction venues and has had several successful novels, including four highly acclaimed Star Trek books. He has become the most published author in the history of Analog magazine. His stories have won the Nebula Award, the Endeavor Award, the Seiun Award, and have been nominated multiple times for the Hugo Award. His stories are often humorous, with likeable characters using intelligence and competence (as opposed to force and violence) to solve their problems. His style harks back to the golden age of science fiction, yet with a modern sensibility and relevance. Even his earliest works hold up well today — and on into the future.
