Gascoyne and his wife, Nancy, a romantic novelist, separate when she discovers he has been unfaithful and is rewriting her latest novel.Nancy works as a part-time receptionist for a doctor's surgery, where the arrival of new locum, Monclar, arouses her interest. Meanwhile, Gascoyne unsuccessfully struggles to hold down his high pressure job as a lawyer and soon turns to alcohol. Then he is sacked and with his own unfinished novel to complete, he takes a job as a night porter at a hotel to conduct research.Now, when a murderer strikes, both Gascoyne and Nancy are drawn into sinister events. With all this going on, what will become of Nancy and Monclar's relationship? And will Gascoyne ever finish his book?
