Library Journal
This long, picaresque novel has no plot. Instead it has a clutter of episodespunctuated by short-short plays, graffiti, puns, catalogues, cartoons, capsule histories. The frequently dislocated narrative traces the dislocated career of its titular Israeli antihero, who spends much of his time wandering through London, Paris and New York, and even more as an inmate of the Klander Psychiatric Intitute of Jerusalem. The reader must move agilely to adapt to the diversity of stylesrealistic, farcical, parodic, phantasmagoric. Despite the welter he leaves in his progress (and retrogress), the author succeeds through his exuberance, his unrelenting energy, to achieve a kind of unity, or at least the illusion of unity. Occasionally fatiguing, the novel is more generally compulsively readable. The nearest ancestor seems to be Pynchon. Arthur Zeiger, English Dept., City Coll., CUNY
