When Shanta Malone is offered a job as a journalist on a Cambridge newspaper, she eagerly accepts, although it means leaving London and leaving Sandy.
The two met as students at Cambridge and as they both assume that they will one day marry. Sandy cannot understand her leaving.
Shanta later receives an invitation to the wedding of Sandy and Jane, daughter of Lord and Lady Rudesheimer. Shocked and disbelieving, she devotes herself to her work and attempts to solve an old mystery of the death of eighteen-year-old Tracy Armitage.
Her investigations uncover complex relationships, puzzles from the past and love and danger for Shanta herself.
