The story of two families: the Phelan-McIlhennys and Quinn-Phelans. The author also wrote "Legs", "Billy Phelan's Greatest Game" and "Ironweed", for which he received the 1983 Pulitzer Prize. He also co-wrote the sceenplay for the film "The Cotton Club".
