(The second book in the Hawk and Fisher series)A novel by Simon R Green
Book 1: This is a murder mystery--think the movie Clue with magic and a duo of detectives. It's fun with a few nice surprises. Some of the ending I saw coming. Some of it was truly a surprise. But it all made sense in the end. The pieces all tied together and it had a satisfying finish.
I give it four stars, not five, because the two lead characters (the police detectives) weren't different from each other at all. They're basically the exact same person, in values, skills, way of speaking, etc. I think that's a missed opportunity to add depth to the series. And also because this wasn't a very big story. It all happens in one house in one night. It was clever and fun, but not epic or especially creative.
I'm curious where he goes with the next book. This was nothing like the prequel to this Blue Moon Rising--which is really another series entirely that's only connected by sharing some characters.
Book 2: This is a fun action-adventure story. There are mysteries to solve but they aren't as deep or driving as the first Hawk and Fisher novel. It felt similar to an action movie--definitely not a murder mystery. The plot: stop the bad guy. How exactly we don't know. And there were a couple of nice plot surprises. But the bad guys were obvious the whole time. It was the good guys plan pitted against the bad guys plan.
While the action was fun, like the other Hawk and Fisher book I reviewed, they weren't well developed characters. (Hence 4 stars and not 5.) They're tough and diligent with smart mouths--but both are exactly the same. That's all. So while it wasn't an emotionally strong read, it was fun.
Book 3: This was a well written action story. Don't expect emotional angst--they're always snarky when things get tense. Don't expect amazing world building--aside from some creative magical beings it's a very standard medieval world. But if you want fun and a murder mystery with some decent plot twists then you'd enjoy this book. Think Lethal Weapon minus the depression and plus magic bad guys.
