It’s not out of the ordinary for a Texas Ranger to be investigating two or more crimes at the same time. But when Jim Blawcyzk gets handed three serious cases within twenty-four hours, that’s a lot for even the most veteran Ranger to handle.
First, an apparent murder-suicide at the McDonald Observatory turns out to be a double homicide. Late at night, after completing his preliminary investigation at the crime scene, Jim is headed for home when he gets a call to a vehicle arson. On his arrival, he discovers that arson is not the only crime. Two men have also been murdered, and a trailer load of valuable cutting and reining horses has just disappeared. By the time he’s through with that crime scene, it’s mid-morning.
He’s on his way home to get some much needed rest before completing his reports and continuing his investigations when a third call comes in. A bank robbery gone wrong has resulted in the shooting of a deputy sheriff and a hostage situation in downtown Alpine. Jim’s assistance is required. By the time that situation is resolved, it’s late Saturday afternoon.
To top things off, when Jim finally arrives home, he is greeted with the news that his six year old son, Josh’s, first grade teacher, has told Josh his father cannot take part in the school’s annual Career Day. According to the new arrival from California’s “woke�� viewpoint, the entire two hundred and fifty year history of the Texas Rangers is rife with violence and intolerance. Josh is crushed by the news.
Jim is well aware of the dark moments in the Rangers’ past. But he’s not about to let one misguided educator smear him and the entire Texas Ranger force, especially not by humiliating his son.
Jim will have a tough job unweaving the tangled webs which lead to the perpetrators of the murders, arsons, and horse thefts. And while he’s at it, that self-righteous teacher will learn exactly what it means to be a member of the most celebrated law enforcement agency in history, the Texas Rangers.
