Heroes

(2014)
A novel by

Rob Buchanan, a fighter pilot flying for the Chinese in the war against Japan, wakes up in hospital in Hong Kong in 1940 with an eye missing. When labelled a hero, but still honourably discharged from the Chinese Air Force, he is offered a job flying freight between Hong Kong and Chungking. He meets Marilyn Sayer, a famous concert pianist, who, overtime, he grows increasingly attracted to.

The romance between Rob and Marilyn blossoms as the war escalates. An evacuation of Hong Kong by all women and children of European descent is ordered but, in love with Rob, Marilyn refuses to comply and volunteers as a nurse to sidestep the order.

Rob's flights become riskier and more fraught with danger as ports and towns ever closer to Hong Kong are captured by the Japanese. On 8th December 1941 they invade the mainland of the British Colony. They reach Kowloon where Marilyn is stationed. She manages to escape to Hong Kong Island, but the Japanese cross the harbour and land on Hong Kong Island in overwhelming force. There is heavy fighting and an offer to accept a British surrender, but the British fight on resolutely. Will Rob and Marilyn survive the battles and horrors of war and be reunited in the end?
