After losing her job, Christy Durrant is in crisis mode.

She flunked her degree, is unsure about her relationship, and doesn't know what to do with her life.

With both her parents dead, Christy is desperate to confide in her bohemian, and much-loved step-mother Melissa.

Melissa lives in Madeira, and Christy decides to book a one-way flight, cancelling her holiday plans with her boyfriend, Dave.

But, once there, she doesn't find the comfort and reassurance she had hoped for.

Melissa fails to meet her at the airport, and instead she is met by Melissa's enigmatic friend, Ben Battista, who warns Christy away from staying too long on the island.

And she arrives, Melissa seems to be a shadow of her former self - drawn and anxious.

Has Melissa's new husband, Felipe, got anything to do with?

Or is Melissa depressed because her once-successful career as an artist seems to be struggling?

Christy soon realises there is something amiss and it seems everyone, even Melissa, is keeping secrets from her.

The death of Melissa's ex-husband, Oliver, is a mystery that keeps haunting the household.

Was his death an accident?

Or could it have been something more sinister?

The handsome and famous ex-racing driver, Ben Battista both thrills and worries Christy.

Does he have an ulterior motive for showing her attention?

And why does he keep warning her off both Melissa and the island?

Melissa's new husband, a shadowy businessman, is hardly there and doesn't seem to be concerned about Melissa's waning state of health.

What could be keeping him away?

Christy must figure out what is plaguing her step-mother before it is too late.

While helping out at a children's hospital clinic, she slowly unravels pieces of the puzzle.

With shady characters all around her, will she discover what is lurking in the shadows?

'A Handful of Shadows' is an intriguing romantic thriller that will keep readers gripped from the first page to the last.
