Four friends, just graduated from high school, taking a camping trip in the Blue Ridge mountains before reporting for summer jobs. Other than John Danver, none of them had any prior experience camping in the wilderness. John was more or less an expert. At any rate, he knew what precautions to take to ensure a safe vacation.

Unfortunately, John was one of the first to be eaten by the monsters that sent the two girls, Dani and Callie, fleeing for their lives through the woods. The other boy, Ito, was already dead. He never had a chance to flee.

The two terrified women ran for miles, crashing through underbrush, slipping and going down in the mud, with no goal other than to escape the things pursuing them. Eventually, the lighted windows of a cabin gave them a destination and hope. If they could make it that far.

Then the elderly man who let them inside stepped out to confront the monsters who had already torn apart their much younger friends. Dani tried to warn him. He went outside anyway, without any weapons. He clearly didn’t understand what was out there.

It was the next morning before Dani realized how strange the cabin her elderly savior, James, called home was. It wasn’t long before she came to realize how strange James himself was. Once she realized that, she couldn’t let it go. As she learns more about him, the only course that makes sense to her is to ally herself with him in an ancient fight against evil.

James had given up the quest. It seemed the quest hadn’t given up on him.
