The final novel in a popular series collectively known as Aeolus Investigations.

The Oracle Sesti has been predicting for most of her life that the Accord will be no more. Her predictions aren’t always correct. They usually are.

In a prior episode, Christine Samue and her impromptu Aeolus team found themselves stranded six thousand years in the past. Six thousand years was plenty of time for the star-threading Apixactin Empire to have grown in size and power to the extent where the unthinkable could happen and they could wipe out the Accord as the Oracle had predicted.

What Christine and her people -- unable to return home and warn Marshal Lexi Stevens -- had to do was clear almost from the beginning.

1) Work out their own differences and become a team in reality and not just in name.

2) Establish a defensible foothold within the Apixactin Empire from which to mount a resistance movement. The eventual goal is to oust the Empress from power. That won’t be easy. The Empress is, like Lexi Stevens, a daughter of the goddess Lokasine.

3) The word from their Oracle is that the Empire would prove to be the lesser of two inimical civilizations facing the Accord and human life in general. In order to combat the larger problem, the Empire first needed to be stabilized — assuming they managed to depose the reigning Empress.

4) At that point, if they manage to build a stable empire at their backs, the overwhelming question becomes could they build a powerful enough fleet of warships in time to be of any use. A corollary to that is would they be able to get their warships to the Accord in time to do any good? Or are they destined to arrive in time only to find smoking ruins?

Empress continues the storyline started in Christine. It ties off the story of Elista and Apollo. In short, it makes every attempt to wrap up the series as a final novel should.
