A Soldier Erect

The lewd, crude hero of The Hand-Reared Boy, Horatio Stubbs, is on excellent form when his regiment is dispatched overseas to India to become part of the unforgettable Forgotten Army, where the main battle is with their irrepressible randiness. Eventually, the regiment is posted to the Burmese Front and plunged into the Battle of Kohima in the mountains of Assam. The campaigns against the Japanese are punctuated with riotous sexual jaunts, while the barrack-room life is side-splittingly coarse.
