The final novel in the River Trilogy, RESOLVE follows earlier books, PROMISE and DESIRE, inexamining the great events taking place in Victoria’s England during the years of the mid-19th Century. The stories are told through the eyes – and adventures – of a group of talented young people building their careers, establishing sometimes difficult relationships and starting families.
This story covers the eventful years 1861 – 65. As well as concerning themselves with affairs at home in England, there was a keen interest in what was taking place across the Atlantic, where America was at war with itself. The close links between the two countries made it impossible to ignore the battle between North and South. All the individuals encountered in the first two novels find themselves drawn, one way or another, into the argument between the States.
As RESOLVE unfolds, we meet some of the great figures of the day, at home and abroad. Important issues are confronted, not least war, poverty and slavery. All the while, the central characters are struggling to deal with every manner of personal challenge: love, loneliness, duty and loyalty ranking high among them.

America was energetic and ambitious but seemed intent on tearing itself apart. Everywhere there were great advances in art and science, yet society appeared set on becoming ever more conservative and repressive as the years passed.
