Yanko, only survivor of a shipwreck, is swept onto the English coast. Speaking no English, the villagers of Colebrook treat him like a stray animal, except for Amy Foster, a young woman who also feels herself to be an outsider. As their relationship deepens, so does the animosity of the villagers.
