New York City teacher Gigi Giovanni is summoned to San Francisco for the reading of the Last Will and Testament of a colleague, Christine Newall, a teacher who taught in her school, a teacher who kept to herself. Gigi is shocked to learn that she is executor of Christine's considerable estate as well as guardian to the dead woman's sister, a patient in a mental institution. In control of her coworker's considerable fortune, Gigi discovers that someone has been embezzling Christine's money, someone who has good reason to want Gigi dead. The bodies pile up not only in San Francisco but also in New York City, Gigi's home town.
