A novel set in fascist Spain of the 1960s, when General Franco was still in power. Antonio Escudero, tired bullfighter from Toledo, is about to turn 30 and retire from the ring. His aristocratic family are hounding him to get married. But Antonio is a deeply closeted gay man, and has other things in mind -- especially after meeting an intriguing village migrant from the North that he suspects has the same bent. Then he discovers that his twin sister Jose has some forbidden hopes of her own with another woman. The two siblings join forces in their efforts to explore and protect these secret loves. But the plan puts all four lives at risk. Spain's government and state religion of that era have fiercely declared war on all non-heterosexual oppression.
