(2003)
A novel by

In 1997, five acquaintances gather at The Glebe retirement home in a quiet corner of Dorset. Each is troubled by the shadow of events that took place twenty-seven years before. Against her better judgment, Bird Dawlish, proprietor of the home, takes in a widower, Hereward Parstock, who was once her lover. Connie Lovibond, Hereward's sister-in-law, who has never been satisfied that her sister's death was natural, is convinced that Bird and possibly Rita Parry, an old traveling woman, can help to discover the truth. The tragic death of Princess Diana heightens emotions and helps to bring about crises of love and violence that affect residents and villagers alike.
