Mottram Oakley loves detective stories, but he didn't expect his British vacation to present him with so ripe a chance to exercise his ambitions. When a murdered man is discovered in the crypt of Welbury cathedral, Oakley teams up with fellow-American John Clevedon to solve the crime. Their efforts come to nothing, but Oakley is pleased to accompany his new friend back to the U.S.A. as a combined secretary-librarian. Unfortunately, a second near-identical murder indicates to the pair that the killer is still very much at large - and appears to have followed them home...

Originally published in 1928, this vintage murder mystery from a popular and prolific American crime writer is laced with sardonic humour at the expense of its hapless narrator.
