After the death of her husband, Alix Johnston, in urgent need of rest and relaxation, sets off on what is supposed to be a holiday on the exotic Greek island of Corfu. Hiding out on the island is Cary, her husband's cousin, who is wanted by the police. Alix discovers that his son, Benjamin, thought to be with his mother in England, is really being kept a virtual prisoner on the island. Fearing for the safety of the child, she's drawn into a smuggling plot filled with intrigue and danger, and finds herself aiding a murderer in an escape plot thattakes her and Benjamin on a dangerous journey through the island mountains where Alix discovers she is the High Hostage
