The credit crunch and the recession are resulting in large public sector funding deficits and significant private pension funding shortfalls. This book considers the role that Government Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) and mortgage REITs can play in ameliorating these problems. The book considers the investment characteristics of REITs, their yield and inflation hedging advantages; their application as a substitute for annuities, the consequent beneficial impact on money supply, pension deficits, and the commercial property market and associated bad debts. The role REITs can play in providing funding for the provision of Indexhold homes for key workers is also developed.
