This 1938 police procedural not only provides a fair-play whodunit involving a murder at a quaint British inn, but it also describes a past world of two discrete classes coming to terms with each other. The police are humble and logical and the aristocrats are pompous and dull, but the times are a-changin' and it's a joy to see how E. Charles Vivian pits the two classes against each other.
