The forces of the Terran Republic stand on the brink of final defeat, the Federation’s forces sweeping in on every front, capitalizing on the collapse of the Senate and the chaos left in the wake of its fall, warring factions fighting meaningless political battles in a desperate attempt to win power. Commodore Jack Hunter, the commander of the Combined Fleet, has been captured, to be transported to a penal colony to face interrogation and execution. The Free Worlds are in turmoil, their governments looking at each other with ever-growing suspicion, each fearing that the other might strike first.

Except for one man, Lieutenant-Major Nykolai Kozak, who searches across the stars for his lost commander, for Commodore Hunter, gathering allies and supporters for one last, desperate throw of the dice, a mission that might bring both the Republic and the Free Worlds back into the war. Find the Commodore, and bring him back alive. Bring back the only man who might snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
