At the age of 22, John Cospatrick finds himself unexpectedly elevated to become King David's lieutenant and arbiter of the unruly parts of north Scotland. The greatest test of his abilities comes when the new king, Robert II, sends him to London to win over the English king's brother John of Gaunt.
