Paul Phelan, a dashing charmer and a trapper of rare animals for zoos, is attacked and drugged one quiet evening in London. He wakes to find himself locked naked in a cage in an unfamiliar basement. His captors, three women dressed in black leather and apparently members of an extreme animal rights group, set out to teach him exactly what it is like to be a trapped animal.

Soon, Phelan again finds himself awakening in an unfamiliar place, this time in woods outside of London. Now free, he is determined to exact revenge for the humiliation that he suffered at the hands of his captors. Just as he is beginning his search, the body of a woman named Maxine Easterbrook, most likely one of Phelan's tormentors, is discovered not far from where Phelan awoke, and Paul is the main suspect.

To protect himself, Phelan is forced to swallow his pride and hire a private detective, the quirky and rather large John Samson. Soon Samson and Phelan are in the midst of a desperate race against time to solve the two mysteries in order to save Paul form both the police and the overzealous animal rights activists.
