A Cup of Tey

(1979)
Miss Pym Disposes / The Daughter of Time
An omnibus of novels by

Brat Farrar: If I could give more than five stars to a book, I would give more than five to this one, and if there us any mystery that could make a great movie it is this book. (I understand a not very great movie was made out if this story, it's not Tey's fault.). I call it a mystery because Tey is a mystery writer and it is one, but it's far more a character study and a study of relationships. The mystery is not who did it - for their was a murder - but rather who is the title character and who will realize that he is not the person he claims to be. There is tenderness to the story and it is about how allowing relationship can grow more than it is about the hatreds that also exist and threaten the hero.
Daughter of Time : what a two for one in this volume. This story is even more if a non-mystery than GpBratt Farrar yet in its own way it is more of a mystery and certainly involves more detective work. Briefly, Tey's detective is hospitalized and bored and has an instinct that the Richard III that Shakespeare depicts in the play of that name got a very bum rap. Historical sources are honestly explored to make that case. Some would call the book gimmicky, others would style it unique. Perhaps it is both but it makes for an interesting read.
