Final Consequence (2009)
A novel by Elaine Taylor

Three in the morning in her office, Catherine Calabretta catches a glimpse of candlelight flickering in an executive suite of the adjacent high rise. In the distorted light, a lithe blonde lies naked on a massive desk; a shadowy masculine figure thrusting slowly back and forth between her knees. Intent on interrupting their fun, Catherine steps into the illumination of florescent overheads just as the man moves a glinting blade toward the woman's right ear and slits her throat.

Catherine squeals in terror and drops behind a sheltering table. The man looks up, stalks to the window and peers across between the two buildings, pointing exactly toward Catherine. A grin curves his lips as he rakes his forefinger across his throat, nodding his head affirmatively. His pantomime message is clear: "You're next."

Two days later, after the police shoot their only suspect in an event they refer to as "suicide by cop," Catherine views the body. She immediately knows it's the wrong man. But the case is closed and she can't convince the cops that the killer is on the loose.

Now begins Catherine's race to identify the psychopath before he fulfills his promise and makes her his next victim.
