Raised in wartime Southwark by her grandfather and aunt, Kate spends the nights in an air-raid shelter where they enter the world of Shakespeare. Kate works in the rebuilt Swan Theatre. But family secrets come to light and she must go to Florence to find the beginning and ending of her story.
