Chateau Despair is a big saga that spans from early in the twentieth century until World War II. Clothilde is growing up in France in a crumbling chateau with a woman she knows as her grandmother. She has to fend for herself after Grandmere dies and goes to Paris to work. She is there throughout the war and is caught up in the resistance. Christine is growing up in the comfort of Penhallows in England. She is safe, happy and protected, living the life of a privileged young lady. But the war will affect them both and one day they will meet. What does destiny have in store for two such very different women?
