The Sadness of Autumn

(2006)
Tales of the Ozarks Hills
A collection of stories by

Jory Sherman has been writing about the Ozarks for nearly 30 years. He began writing about those green hills and deep shadowy hollows almost from the time he set foot in that magical country that covers parts of Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Illinois and Kentucky. His first book about this country was called MY HEART IS IN THE OZARKS, and is still in print, as it has been for nearly three decades.

Bob St. John, author of Reflections In A Rearview Mirror and other books, writes that "Jory Sherman doesn't just tell a story but brings it to life through his characters, places, situations and obvious knowledge of history. When called for, he can paint with a broad brush. At other times, he uses simple touches that make his people real."

Jory Sherman began his literary career as a poet in San Francisco's famed North Beach in the late 1950s, during the heyday of the Beat Generation. His poetry and short stories were widely published when he began writing commercial fiction. He has won numerous awards for his poetry and prose and was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in Letters for his novel, Grass Kingdom. He won a Spur Award from Western Writers of America for The Medicine Horn. He has also won a number of awards from the Missouri Writers Guild. He lived in the Ozarks for over 20 years, last making his home in Branson. His writing regularly appears in The Ozarks Mountaineer and his latest collection of Ozarks pieces are in The Hills of Home, published by Hardshell Word Factory.

These stories bring to life the magic and mystery of the Ozarks hills. The reader will come away with that same feeling of wonder and delight that have endeared readers to Jory's Ozarks writing for the past 30 years. As Warren French once wrote of Jory's writing, "Jory Sherman has a strange and powerful knowledge of language, and an almost perfect ear."

Come into the hills. Listen to its songs.
