The Pride of Life

(2016)
A Novella by

Without ever seeing it on the page, Joanna Yas realized that she "desperately wanted to unlock the uniquely fraught relationship at the heart of the story: a son who can't stop wanting approval from his mother and who is inevitably disappointed; a reclusive mother stuck in time and place, marooned in the Bay Area." Her immediate draw towards the story - "I needed to give "The Pride of Life" my full attention - needed to and couldn't help but do so" - is a pull that remains as she revisits the story with us today.
