The Burning Land
(The first book in the Fire Brats series)(1987)
A novel by
Barbara Siegel, Scott Siegel and Barbara Steiner
School Library Journal
Gr 8-10 Matt and Dani survive a nuclear bombing only to emerge into a world of devastation and lawlessness. The breath less narrative moves from one danger to another, but each is a reasonable extrapo lation of what we know about the likely effects of nuclear war. This after-the- bomb landscape bears a close resem blance to the world of ``Mad Max'' where the worst threats are not from nuclear weapons but from their survivors. While this book does not have the originality or depth of introspective character develop ment found in David Palmer's Emergence (Bantam, 1984), its closeness to our pre sent world and its use of commonly held assumptions and images make it the kind of science fiction that can be recommend ed to a wide selection of readers. The ex citing cover and action-filled plot make it easy to book talk, and the contents should provoke discussion. Carolyn Caywood, Virginia Beach Public Library
