| My Blue Tongue (1991) (A book in the Maple Street Kids series) A novel by Stephen Roos |
School Library Journal
Gr 3-5-- Fourth grader Rooney Sinclair plays outrageous pranks that often hurt people's feelings and get her into real trouble. Her father has a gambling problem, and the entire family is suffering both financially and emotionally. Life is in a turmoil, but everyone is denying what is going on until the situation comes to a head. This fourth entry in the series is a commendable undertaking, but Roos takes the easy way out; everything works out with speed and ease. There is no real character development, and readers don't see how this family arrived at the point at which the story begins. Sketchy black-and-white cartoons are scattered throughout. --Kenneth E. Kowen, Atascocita Middle School Library, Humble, TX
