(A book in the Great Ship series)
A novel by

Marrow. The most exceptional planet in the universe. Hidden in the core of a world-sized starship named the Great Ship, Marrow is an iron sphere rich with secrets and immortal life, and HAMMERWING is a new novel set in that fine Hell -- the direct follow-up to 2018's THE DRAGONS OF MARROW.

One exceptional day is coming, and everything is about to change. Old mysteries will be answered. Ancient feuds will end. And a boy named Diamond will serve as a witness to all of it.

Miocene was Diamond's grandmother: A dragon and a god as well as being an exceptionally tall woman. Her hair was short and drab black and very thick, helping obscure the round hyperfiber juggernaut aimed at her dragon mind. Close-set eyes looked like wrought iron set on perfect white wavers of porcelain. Standing before him, she seemed too narrow to be real, but when he was beside her, Diamond was impressed by how deep and strong her body really was. This particular body was only centuries old. Yet the mind inside had no official age and no apparent interest in calculating her true lifespan. In principle, bioceramic brains were immune to wear and capable of everlasting memories. Yet there were always limits for how much knowledge could find shelter inside ancient heads. "The trick is recognizing what needs to be forgotten, what has to be left behind." His grandmother was watching him and not watching him as she spoke. "Every million years or so, you need to measure your experiences and then enthusiastically kill whatever you won't need to carry into your next breath."

Robert Reed is the author of hundreds of published science fiction stories, plus a good array of novels. He won the Hugo Award in 2007, for his novella "A Billion Eves." But Reed is best known for his Great Ship saga, and for characters like Washen and Pamir, Miocene and Mere.
