Steele

(2000)
A novel by

Weary of the bloody rustler's war, Steele leaves his native Texas looking for change. Heading north, he winds up in Deadwood, Dakota Territory. While there he meets a group of settlers from the East, all inexperienced greenhorns looking to stake their claim in the West. Among this group are the beautiful Elizabeth White and her father. Steele immediately takes a liking to Elizabeth. But some rather shady promoters are influencing the Whites into joining their search for gold in the Black Hills. Much to the chagrin of the promoters, Steele volunteers to serve as wagon master. Among the promoters is Cheyenne war chief, Two Dogs, who speaks of a mysterious battle for which he is gathering rifles. This makes Steele even more suspicious. When the promoters turn on the small group, Steele manages to thwart them and Two Dogs, but at a very dear price. He, with Elizabeth by his side, chases the promoters across the country and is witness to the Custer massacre at Little Big Horn.
