There’s an awning on top of the roof of the apartment building. It comes up over the couches that they’ve pulled up there, keeping the people sitting dry when it rains. It’s raining, now.
“Mom?” Emily says as she steps out on the roof. She smiles at the sight of Liz sitting on the couch, just watching the storm. “Mind if I join you?” she asks.
Liz waves her over, draping an arm over Emily’s shoulders as she sits next to her. For a moment, they’re silent, with Emily leaning into her side as the rain falls all around them. It’s rather strong, and once in a while a gust of wind has the rain hitting them, but neither seems to care.
“You okay?” Emily asks, finally, looking up at her.
“Why wouldn’t I be?” Liz asks. “It’s a beautiful day.”
