Jenny Roberts was born a boy in Bridlington and changed to her correct gender in 1996 at the London Bridge Hospital. She identified as lesbianshortly afterwards and founded the Libertas! Women's Bookshop in York in 1998 and the York Lesbian Arts Festival in 2001.

Libertas transferred to new owners in late 2004 and, since then, she has become a full time writer.
