Set in Dumfries, this book spans the years from 1910 to 1945 and centres on the character of Kate Kennedy. She is just 13 when her mother dies and thereafter Kate takes over the running of the household and acts as a mother to her younger siblings. When Kate grows up, she decides to marry Charlie.
