As in the author's two previous novels, the narrator is an anonymous member of the Metropolitan Police. Giving an insider's viewpoint of the police force, this time the narrator is investigating the disappearance of a 'French-born Lady of the Manor' who his superiors are no longer interested in and have placed in the 'Unexplained Deaths' file.
