OK, so we all know that men and women--particularly the teenage variety--see things SO completely differently that it is pretty amazing that any of them actually manage to get it together at all. But wouldn't it be nice, just for once, if someone could take a sneaky peak into the mind of that boy you fancy across the street, or the girl you see on the bus every morning, just so you could get an inkling of what really is going on in there?
Chloe Rayban, in the delightfully twitchy Watching You, Watching Me, does just that as she tells the story of Natasha and Matt on their painful road to love. The book is written in two separate parts, one telling Matt's version of events and the other telling Natasha's, each of which could be read individually, but combined give the full story of the two hapless teenagers as they watch each other from a distance, each trying to impress the other with their failed attempts at cool.
A sort of two-in-one romance with a distinct urban edge, Watching You, Watching Me gives a clever twist on the teen 'lurve thing' without condescension and with a sharp pang of pathos that will certainly hit the spot with anyone who has ever suffered at the hands of Cupid and his misrouted arrows. (Age 12 and over) --Susan Harrison
